Jamie Cullum’s day has come

Share

Jamie Cullum, along with the likes of Norah Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, is part of a new generation of music artists who casually defy traditional stylistic categories. The 26-year-old British singer-songwriter-pianist’s Verve debut CD, “Twentysomething,” featured an eclectic blend of material that included originals as well as several covers, such as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “I Could Have Danced All Night” (anchored by a hip-hop percussion groove), Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary,” Radiohead’s “High and Dry” and Cole Porter’s “I Get a Kick Out of You.”

“Twentysomething,” which was nominated for a Grammy last year for best jazz vocal album, sold more than 2 million copies worldwide (including 400,000 in the U.S.). His brand-new album, “Catching Tales,” also features some originals in addition to his musical takes on such standards as Al Dubin and Harry Warren’s “I Only Have Eyes for You” and Bob Hilliard and Mort Garson’s “Our Day Will Come.” He’ll make a stop at the Roxy on Friday.
