‘Fog’ not given preview

The horror film “The Fog,” starring Tom Welling, Maggie Grace, Rade Sherbedgia and DeRay Davis, also opens today in general release. Because Sony Pictures did not make the movie available for advance screenings, the review will appear in Monday’s Calendar.

“The Fog,” which opens today without benefit of screenings for critics, is the second remake of a John Carpenter film to hit theaters this year, the first being “Assault on Precinct 13.” Filming mostly screenplays he wrote or co-wrote, including those based on published fiction, Carpenter has just two “remakes” to his credit: “The Thing,” which was closer to the 1938 short story on which it is based than the 1951 Howard Hawks version, and “Village of the Damned,” a far less creepy version of the 1960 movie adapted from the novel “The Midwich Cuckoos” by John Wyndham (“The Day of the Triffids”). Grosses for Carpenter movies may seem modest by today’s standards, but most didn’t cost much to make or market, so they were by and large profitable.
