Marine Cpl. Abraham McCarver, 22, has been awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest medal for bravery in combat, for rescuing Marines during a firefight in Iraq in April 2004.

McCarver, a native of Memphis, Tenn., braved fire from insurgents to reach an amphibious assault vehicle that caught fire during a battle in Fallouja.

“There are just some things that need to be done,” he said.
