The Department of Water and Power is prepared to pay as much as $3,445,000 in courtordered fines for the agency’s delay in restoring a significant flow of water to an Inyo County river.
The agency board is set Tuesday to authorize payment of funds to cover a $5,000-per-day court sanction set by an Inyo County judge in July.
The penalty applies every day until the city restores a certain level of water flow to the Lower Owens River.
The deadline for completing the work is July 2007, at which point the maximum fine would be reached.
Earlier compliance would reduce the total amount.
