Pay, Benefit Sacrifices Should Start From Top

Delphi joins the list of major corporations filing for bankruptcy (“Nation’s Largest Auto Supplier, Delphi, Files for Bankruptcy,” Oct. 9).
And the first steps are always to cut wages and benefits and lay off workers.
Just days before filing, Delphi sweetened the severance package of 21 top executives.
It sickens me to see major corporations give bonuses to the top executives and cuts to the workers.
Top executives should be the first to get major pay cuts. They were steering the ship. They were making the decisions. They should accept responsibility, take major pay and benefit cuts, and lead by example.

Consider the fact that Delphi is willing to retain its employees instead of moving the jobs overseas; that is not the worst-case scenario for workers.
Sure, they will have to reorient their lifestyles, but they will have a job and now their children will have a chance at those same jobs.
Just remember that everywhere else in the country, people would gladly take this pay level, and they have the same levels of education required for the job.
