A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly 65 years in prison for kidnapping and raping his wife.

San Joaquin County Superior Court Judge Cinda Fox said Friday that Andrew Wright Gill gagged and hog-tied his wife before raping her after she asked him to leave during an incident last year that lasted for hours. Gill was convicted July 27 of 10 charges.

Fox said a journal written by Gill’s wife described a troubled marriage that she wanted to leave. The judge added that the incident victimized Gill’s wife and their children, who heard their mother crying and being slapped by their father.

The wife initially said she was raped but later said it was consensual.

She read a statement in court asking for leniency for her husband. She called Gill an attentive father and active church member who was depressed because he was unemployed.

Gill said the trial amounted to the state’s attempt to regulate the couple’s sex life and said he would appeal.

“How does somebody get life for kidnapping and raping your own wife?” he asked.
