It Doesn’t Take Freud to Analyze Angel Woes

The 2002 Anaheim Angels batted .282 and won the World Series. The 2005 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim batted .175 and got run out of Anaheim.

The Angel offense sputtered during the American League championship series, as it did so many times during the regular season, and the reason seems obvious. They got nothing from two key players who always produced in the past -- one a “sparkplug” type guy who gets on base to start rallies, the other a power-hitting, RBI-producing player.

Figgy and Vlad? No, I’m talking about David Eckstein and Troy Glaus!

If anybody thinks that Doug Eddings’ call/non-call/whatever in Game 2 didn’t change the course of the ALCS, then that person has only to look at Kirk Gibson’s only at-bat in 1988 to see how one play can totally demoralize a team for the remainder of a series. The Angels could have been up 2-0 in the series, and it is doubtful that they would have gone on to be swept at home.

OK, Arte Moreno, the Los Angeles Angels name didn’t work on winning the ALCS. Now give us back the Anaheim Angels, because that’s who we are!
