GOP’s conservative base is not weakening

Re “GOP Is Caught Between Alliances,” Oct. 19
Ronald Brownstein’s news analysis about the GOP losing independents and worrying about losing its conservative base is off the mark. Republicans always like to voice their opinions in public. This does not mean the base is weakening. Mainstream America is smart enough to know what each side stands for. In the elections next year Republicans will keep their base, and if the Democrats continue to offer no new ideas, independents will tend to migrate to the party that will present solutions to the current problems.
