* Ingram Micro Inc., a Santa Ana-based distributor of computer and electronic products, said third-quarter profit fell 37% to $48.4 million, or 29 cents a share, because of higher costs for cutting jobs and closing locations. The results beat analysts’ expectations. Sales rose 16% to $6.9 billion.

* Franklin Resources Inc., a San Mateo, Calif.-based mutual fund company, said fiscal fourth-quarter earnings soared 78% to $334.5 million, or $1.28 a share, as a surge in international stock prices boosted assets. The manager of the Franklin and Templeton mutual fund families was expected to earn $1.02 a share.

* Gateway Inc., an Irvine-based computer maker, reported a third-quarter profit of $15.1 million, or 4 cents a share, slightly exceeding estimates. It lost $56.5 million, or 16 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales rose for a second straight quarter, gaining 11% to $1.02 billion, and topping estimates.

* Western Digital Corp., a Lake Forest-based supplier of computer disk drives, said fiscal first-quarter profit more than doubled to $68.8 million, or 31 cents a share, on demand for storage devices used in notebook computers. Sales rose 23% to $1.01 billion.

* Chip maker International Rectifier Corp. said profit for its fiscal first quarter sank 30% to $26.2 million, or 36 cents a share. The results matched Wall Street’s expectations. The El Segundo firm’s revenue skidded 13% to $272.6 million.

* Conexant Systems Inc., a Newport Beach-based maker of components used in broadband network gear, said it returned to profitability in its fiscal fourth quarter, earning $50.1 million, or 10 cents a share, contrasted with a year-earlier loss of $370.5 million, or 79 cents. Revenue was flat at $214.5 million.

* Westchester-based California Pizza Kitchen Inc. said third-quarter profit more than doubled to $5.5 million, or 28 cents a share, on a 17% gain in sales to $124.5 million. Sales at restaurants open at least a year rose 7.1%.

* Emulex Corp., a Costa Mesa-based storage networking company, said its fiscal first-quarter profit rose 16% to $16.4 million, or 19 cents a share, on a 43% gain in revenue to $104.4 million.

* IHOP Corp. of Glendale said third-quarter profit rose 56% to $12 million, or 62 cents a share, as sales at eateries open at least a year rose 4.5%. Total sales rose 5.5% to $91.3 million.

* Home builder Standard Pacific Corp. of Irvine said third-quarter profit rose 29% to $96.4 million, or $1.37 a share, helped in part by the growth of its Arizona and Florida operations. Revenue from home building operations rose 8% to $937 million.

* Game publisher THQ Inc. of Calabasas said its fiscal second-quarter loss narrowed to $1.4 million, or 2 cents a share, from $6.4 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier. Sales surged 48% to $142.7 million.
