Scott Hatteberg hit a three-run homer, and Bobby Kielty and Jay Payton also connected as the Oakland A’s built an early double-digit lead in a 12-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night at Oakland.

The A’s inconsistent offense was back in top form, chasing Al Leiter (4-4) in the first inning of his first loss since Aug. 2. He got only two outs in the shortest start of his career not caused by injury.

After scoring only three runs while losing two of three to the Angels this week, the A’s sent 19 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the first two innings against the Yankees.

Dan Haren (12-10) pitched six innings to earn his second straight win for the A’s.

The only other time the Yankees were shut out this season was April 29, when Toronto’s Roy Halladay beat Randy Johnson, 2-0. Oakland has a league-best 11 shutouts.

Cleveland 6, Minnesota 1 -- C.C. Sabathia won his sixth consecutive start by scattering three hits over 7 1/3 innings at Minneapolis. Sabathia (12-9) didn’t yield a hit until the sixth, when he surrendered two-out singles to Jason Bartlett and Shannon Stewart.

Sabathia struck out seven and walked one and the six-game winning streak is the longest in his five major league seasons.

Chicago 9, Detroit 1 -- Carl Everett and Juan Uribe hit three-run homers at Chicago to help Freddy Garcia win for the first time since July 31.

Garcia threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the fourth, but Chicago made it 8-1 in the bottom half when Pablo Ozuna hit an RBI single and Everett homered.

Garcia (12-7) gave up one run and two hits in seven innings and struck out seven.

Baltimore 7, Boston 3 -- John Maine (2-1) and five relievers combined on a four-hitter at Boston. The Red Sox lost for only the second time in 21 home games and failed to score seven runs at Fenway Park for the first time since Aug. 2.

Texas 8, Kansas City 7 -- Rod Barajas homered twice, including a 10th-inning drive for the Rangers, who wasted a four-run lead in the ninth at Kansas City, Mo. Barajas, who has homered in three consecutive games for the third time in his career, hit the go-ahead homer off Mike MacDougal (3-5).

Toronto 4, Tampa Bay 3 -- Joe Borowski’s wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the go-ahead run to score. Gregg Zaun was batting and tried to call time with two out, but plate umpire Larry Vanover didn’t allow it. Borowski (1-2) then threw a wild pitch, allowing Shea Hillenbrand to score from third.
