Drowning Victim Is ID’d as Anaheim Man
A man who drowned Sunday evening off Newport Beach has been identified as Avelino Arrellanes, 46, of Anaheim.
Arrellanes apparently became caught in a rip current near 28th Street, authorities said. Lifeguards swam out to rescue him and a woman in distress about 6:10 p.m., said Newport Beach Lifeguard Capt. Eric Bauer.
Arrellanes was facedown when lifeguards reached him. The woman was pulled to safety.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate Arrellanes on the beach. He was pronounced dead at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.
