PG&E; Steps Up Pipeline Plan, Citing Flood Risk
Pacific Gas & Electric Co. announced plans to speed up construction of a $30-million pipeline to replace a line that is vulnerable to flooding in the event of a major levee failure in Northern California.
The line would serve the PG&E; Corp. unit’s largest natural-gas storage facility, near Stockton. The company hopes to have the project completed by winter 2006.
A PG&E; study concluded that a levee breach resulting in the destruction of the existing pipeline, which carries natural gas from the McDonald Island storage facility, could cost Northern California’s economy $300 million to $1 billion.
