New Orleans’ enduring legacy

RE “A City That Awakened Her Senses” [Sept. 8]: Barbara King’s description of the people, sights, sounds, smells and atmosphere of New Orleans brought tears to my eyes. It will be through such affirmative descriptions that the memory of this unique, world-renowned city will be kept fresh until it can be rebuilt. I will be doing my small part by wearing Mardi Gras beads sent to me by a poet friend who survived in Bay Saint Louis, Miss., to hasten the day when that festival will return to its proper home. I’ll also listen to jazz and blues to honor the New Orleans legacy. Thank you for your sensitive portrayal.

THE story of your love of New Orleans touched me deeply, and I have similar feelings. I am a Californian, but it was love at first site when I first visited. I loved its unapologetic sensuality, the way the music seeped out of every crack and crevice, the beauty of imperfection. I’m an architect, and loved the natural juxtaposition of styles and the natural rhythm of the neighborhoods. It reminds me that nothing is certain, and to live each day in gratitude and appreciation with a prayer for those who are less fortunate.

I was moved to tears by your story in the paper today. My husband and I choose not to have a TV in our home at this time so I rely on the L.A. Times for coverage of Katrina. Please keep writing the stories so the truth gets told. We need to know.
