The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq:

Kurtis D. K. Arcala, 22, of Palmer, Alaska; sergeant, Army. Arcala died Sept. 11 in Tikrit, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position during convoy escort operations. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Jeremy M. Campbell, 21, of Middlebury, Pa.; specialist, Army. Campbell died Sept. 11 in Baghdad, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during patrol operations. He was assigned to the 108th Military Police Company, 503rd Military Police Battalion (Airborne), 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Christopher L. Everett, 23, of Huntsville, Texas; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Everett died Sept. 7 at Al Taqqadum Airbase, west of Baghdad, in a motor pool accident. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 112th Armor Regiment, 56th Brigade Combat Team in Arlington, Texas.

Alfredo B. Silva, 35, of Calexico; sergeant, Army National Guard. Silva died Thursday in Baghdad, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during patrol operations.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 184th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division in Modesto.

Shane C. Swanberg, 24, of Kirkland, Wash.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Swanberg died Thursday of injuries in an explosion resulting from indirect fire at Forward Operating Base, Camp Ramadi, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
