The United States pledged $92 million to help prevent widespread famine in the drought-stricken Horn of Africa.

Extensive drought across the region has already caused food shortages in southern and central Somalia as well as Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti.

U.N. aid agencies reported a week ago that famine could soon claim 10,000 lives every month in Somalia if the upcoming rainy season is as dry as forecast.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said President Bush was calling on other donor nations to contribute.
