Police fired tear gas to break up stone-throwing protesters on the first day of a four-day nationwide strike against King Gyanendra’s absolute rule, witnesses and authorities said.

Pro-democracy activists took to the streets in the temple town of Lalitpur as well as in Kalanki, on the outskirts of the capital, Katmandu, in defiance of a government ban.

Hours earlier, rebels attacked Malangwa town, freeing more than 100 inmates from jail. Six policemen, six guerrillas and two civilians were killed; eight troops died when a helicopter crashed.
