Opposition Lawmaker Shot Dead in Capital
An opposition congressman was shot to death as he stepped out of party headquarters in Guatemala City.
Mario Pivaral was killed blocks from where President Oscar Berger was launching a plan to put 2,400 ex-soldiers on the streets to back up police, who have been unable to handle a crime wave.
Pivaral was shot by two people on a motorcycle as he stepped out to answer a cellphone call, Police Commissioner Edgar Orellana quoted witnesses as saying. The killers had been waiting for him, Congressman Edgar Rodriguez said.
