U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces killed two suspected Taliban commanders during raids in Helmand province, and a suicide car bombing outside a NATO military base killed two Afghans, the U.S. military said.

Military spokesman Sgt. Scott Gomer declined to release the names of the Taliban and there was no way to verify their positions.

The bombing took place near the gates of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization base in Herat city, home to hundreds of Italian soldiers. Police Chief Mohammed Ayub Salingi said one of the dead was an Afghan guard and the other was a passerby. The attacker also died.
