It’s as packed as the area’s powder

This year, there may be enough snow to ski at Mammoth through July 4. With nearly 500 inches for the season and 13 to 15 feet of packed powder, the mountain is almost certain to be open Memorial Day -- May 29. But neither date will make or break Mammoth Lakes, which has become a year-round destination.

Tom Rosaasen has built and sold 16 homes in the Mammoth area. This newly built one, in a high-end neighborhood known as the Bluffs, is more like a primary residence than a weekend retreat, judging by its size -- 5,500 square feet.

The shingled and stone-clad house has mountain views and is nestled in the trees bordering Inyo National Forest.

“It’s less than 10 minutes from Chair 15,” Rosaasen said, “but it’s also near two golf courses.”

About the house: This is not the type of construction usually found in ski areas. Rosaasen has paid close attention to such details as custom-crafted finish work. Only here and there are clues that the home is in a resort area. Among them: The list price includes furnishings, and two of the bedrooms are master suites.

Asking price: $4.2 million.

Size: There are five bedrooms and 4 1/2 bathrooms plus a loft and an office.

Features: Each master suite has a fireplace and a tumbled-marble bathroom. Each of the other bedrooms has its own bathroom. There is a two-story entry, granite counters in the kitchen, a great room with a fireplace, a dining room with a view of the patio and spas, a library, a laundry and storage for ski gear.

Where: Mammoth Lakes

Listing agent: Stacey Bardfield, Mammoth Sierra Properties, (760) 934-4501.
