41 Taliban Rebels Reported Killed in Aerial Bombing, Gun Battle
Afghan forces backed by coalition helicopters attacked a suspected Taliban hide-out in southern Afghanistan, sparking a gun battle that left 41 rebels dead and several wounded, a provincial governor said today.
Six Afghan police officers were killed and nine wounded in Friday’s fighting with Taliban rebels in Sangisar, a town 25 miles southwest of Kandahar city, Gov. Asadullah Khalid said.
“Acting on intelligence reports that Taliban have gathered in Sangisar to plan an attack in Kandahar, we launched this operation Friday and the fighting continued from morning to evening,” he said.
Coalition forces suffered no casualties, Khalid said.
“Forty-one Taliban were killed in the fighting, mostly as a result of air bombing,” he said at a news conference in Kandahar.
