From Times Wire Reports

A wildlife officer shot and killed a female mountain lion that a day earlier had attacked a 7-year-old boy hiking with his family.

Boulder County sheriff’s officials said the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The 80-pound cat bit the boy’s head. The child also suffered puncture wounds and scrapes on his legs, probably from the animal’s claws, Division of Wildlife spokesman Tyler Baskfield said.

The boy was apparently last in a single-file line of eight people taking a short hike Saturday at Flagstaff Mountain, Baskfield said. The group was 50 yards from a parking lot when the cat attacked.

The officer shot the cat in the interest of public safety, Baskfield said. It was shot in the same area as the attack.
