Actor and director Antoni Cimolino will be the head of the Stratford Festival of Canada. He’ll take on the role of general director beginning in the fall, the theater company said Tuesday.

The festival, North America’s largest classical repertory theater, is striking out in a different creative direction with Cimolino, who has been its executive director since 1998.

He intends to lead a team of up to four artistic directors, who will be responsible for programming beginning with the 2008 season.

The theater, which has a 2006 budget of more than $46.5 million, drew more than 540,000 theatergoers last year.
