Officials Plan to Run State Hurricane Shelters
State officials said in Birmingham that they intended to run a network of hurricane shelters, using facilities at community colleges to house as many as 25,000 people at a time rather than relying on the Red Cross.
The state plan was developed in response to problems last year after Hurricane Katrina, when thousands of people were packed into improvised shelters. Gov. Bob Riley, a Republican, said he planned to have 25 to 30 designated disaster shelters ready beginning June 1.
“It just makes sense to do it this way,” Riley said.
