Terrorism Trial Juries Ask for More Material
The two juries in the federal terrorism trial of a Lodi father and son asked for supplemental material from the court Wednesday as they continued deliberations.
In a possible signal that a videotaped confession by the son, Hamid Hayat, might not be considered enough evidence for a guilty verdict, jurors in that case asked if they could also consider secretly taped conversations between an FBI informant and Hayat about sending money to Pakistan.
Hayat, 23, is charged with providing material support for terrorism by attending a terrorist training camp in Pakistan in late 2003. The government has described the confession during an FBI interrogation as central to its case against Hayat, who is also charged with lying to the FBI about attending the camp.
The jury in the case against his father, Lodi ice cream truck driver Umer Hayat, 48, asked U.S. District Judge Garland Burrell Jr. if it could review the testimony of three FBI agents. The elder Hayat is charged with two counts of lying to the FBI.
Both juries began their deliberations last week after two months of testimony.
Burrell said he would respond to the requests this morning, but indicated that transcripts in the Umer Hayat case would not be available until Friday.
The judge also said he would consider a government motion to wait until both juries have decided before releasing the verdicts.
