Oakland, Army aided refugees too
REGARDING “A City of Great Magnitude” [April 16]: We recently toured the 1906 San Francisco quake sites and found two restored quake cottages at the Presidio, along with three tents in which many refugees stayed. Both the tents and cottages are furnished as they would have been by the refugees. The tents came from the Army, which played a significant role in solving many of the immediate problems post-quake.
The Presidio Visitors Center (now on the northern side of the Parade Ground) has staff that can explain the Army’s role in the recovery. Also, the Oakland Museum of California has an exhibit that includes archival films and a quake “simulator.” It documents Oakland’s role in caring for refugees.
