A man was shot and wounded by police early Saturday after fleeing from a routine traffic stop, and was taken into custody inside a church, police said.

Police officers were conducting a traffic stop at Downey Avenue and 3rd Street about 4:30 a.m. when the driver bolted from the vehicle and fled east onto the grounds of the First Baptist Church of Downey, police Lt. Carl Charles said.

Officers had blocked off the area for a search when the shooting occurred, Charles said.

Peter Pelayo was arrested by a sheriff’s special weapons team and taken to a hospital with a leg wound, the lieutenant said.
