Other Deaths
The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq and a soldier who died at a U.S. hospital of his injuries in Afghanistan:
Phillip E. Baucus, 28, of Wolf Creek, Mont.; corporal, Marine Corps. Baucus was among four Marines killed July 29 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Anthony E. Butterfield, 19, of Clovis, Calif.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Butterfield was among four Marines killed July 29 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Kurt E. Dechen, 24, of Springfield, Vt.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Dechen was killed in combat Thursday in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division while attached to Regimental Combat Team 5, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
Joshua A. Ford, 20, of Wayne, Neb.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Ford was killed Monday when a roadside bomb exploded near his vehicle in Numaniya, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 189th Transportation Company, 485th Corps Support Battalion, Army National Guard in Norfolk, Neb.
Jason Hanson, 21, of Forks, Wash.; private first class, Marine Corps. Hanson was among four Marines killed July 29 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
James W. Higgins, 22, of Frederick, Md.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Higgins was killed in combat July 27 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.
Hai Ming Hsia, 37, of New York; specialist, Army. Hsia was killed in combat Tuesday in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany.
Ryan D. Jopek, 20, of Merrill, Wis.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Jopek was killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near his convoy in Tikrit, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, Army National Guard in Waupun, Wis.
Dustin D. Laird, 23, of Martin, Tenn.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Laird was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device exploded under the vehicle he was driving in Rawah, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 913th Engineer Company, 46th Engineer Battalion, Army National Guard in Union City, Tenn.
Marc A. Lee, 28, of Hood River, Ore.; petty officer second class, Navy. Lee was killed in combat Wednesday in Ramadi, west of Baghdad. The aviation ordnanceman was a member of a SEAL team based in Coronado, Calif.
Adam R. Murray, 21, of Cordova, Tenn.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Murray was among three Marines killed July 27 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee near Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Timothy D. Roos, 21, of Cincinnati; corporal, Marine Corps. Roos was among three Marines killed July 27 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee near Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Enrique C. Sanchez, 21, of Garner, N.C.; private first class, Marine Corps. Sanchez was among three Marines killed July 27 when a roadside bomb exploded near their Humvee near Ramadi, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Daniel A. Suplee, 39, of Ocala, Fla.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Suplee died Thursday at James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa, Fla., where he was being treated for a severe head injury suffered April 1 when his Humvee was involved in a traffic accident in Kabul, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 153rd Cavalry Squadron, Army National Guard in Ocala, Fla.
Joseph A. Tomci, 21, of Stow, Ohio; corporal, Marine Corps. Tomci was killed Wednesday when a roadside bomb exploded near him in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
George M. Ulloa Jr., 23, of Austin, Texas; sergeant, Marine Corps. Ulloa was killed Thursday when his tank struck a roadside bomb in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Christian B. Williams, 27, of Winter Haven, Fla.; sergeant, Marine Corps. Williams was among four Marines killed July 29 in Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif.
