Their Fond Memories of California Living

Share

I appreciated the article on San Francisco-Los Angeles (“I Left My Heart in San Francisco . . . “ by Shawn Hubler, July 16). I definitely can relate. I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area, and my loves were concerts at the Greek Theatre, surfing in Malibu and shopping at Olvera Street. When I relocated to the San Francisco area (Marin County), I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge to work every day, and I loved dinner at Alioto’s on the Wharf and schlepping in Sausalito.

Now back home in Los Angeles, I still miss the sound of the foghorns in the bay and the hustle of Chinatown. Just call me a California girl.

Like Hubler, I can’t choose this or that California. My freshman year at Humboldt State was followed by five years in Silicon Valley and countless days spent in Berkeley, Sacramento and Tahoe. After an adventurous spring on the beaches of San Diego, I landed at LAX in 1985. I truly love our City of Angels, my “hometown.”

And yet every time I fertilize the garden with fish emulsion, I develop a hankering for the clam chowder from the docks in Crescent City or Fisherman’s Wharf. During a recent movie/dinner date at Pasadena’s Paseo Colorado, I found myself saying aloud, “Well, this is certainly no Santana Row (San Jose).” And a recent trip to Tahoe and return drive down Highway 395 had me pining for . . . well, pines.
