DAVID SCHOLNICK and three friends from his high school days traveled through Morocco, Senegal and Mali in late 2004. The men covered a lot of ground during the 2 1/2 -week journey but ran out of time before making it all the way to Tombouctou in Mali. “That’ll be another trip, I guess,” said Scholnick, who starts graduate school at the George Washington University in the fall. He took this photo with a Canon PowerShot S30 outside a school in Kaolack, Senegal. The boy was showing off the prayer board on which he had written a passage from the Koran in Arabic.
