Flooding Kills Scores, Displaces 650,000

Monsoon rains triggered floods and collapsed houses in western and southern India, killing at least 139 people in recent days, a government official said.
About 650,000 people have been forced from their homes to higher ground in western, southern and eastern India, officials said. Many were evacuated by helicopter.
The western state of Maharashtra was the site of 97 of the deaths, said the state’s director general of information, Manisha Mhaiskar.
Several low-lying areas in Mumbai were also flooded.
