Island Dispute Turns Deadly on Japanese Boat
A Russian patrol boat fired on a Japanese fishing vessel near disputed islands, apparently killing a fisherman. The Japanese government protested the incident and summoned Russia’s deputy ambassador to explain.

The crab fisherman was killed near Kaigara island, one of several off the northeast tip of Hokkaido that are claimed by Japan and Russia, Japanese coast guard official Kazuhiro Nakaya said.
