Ariana Ghez, principal oboe of the Rochester Philharmonic and the Santa Fe Opera, has been appointed principal oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, effective Sept. 28.

Ghez, 26, was selected by music director Esa-Pekka Salonen from a field of 100 applicants, narrowed down to six who actually played with the orchestra.

Ghez holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Columbia University, where she was enrolled in the Columbia/Juilliard School joint program and studied with oboists John Mack and John Ferrillo. She pursued graduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she studied with oboist Richard Woodhams.
