Israeli aircraft and artillery Friday pounded suspected Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon after guerrillas attacked an Israeli military post in the disputed Shabaa Farms border area, wounding one soldier.

Hezbollah said it fired rockets and mortars on the Roueissat Alam position in retaliation for the killing Wednesday of a Lebanese shepherd by Israeli troops.

“We see this attack as a very serious provocation,” Israeli army spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said.

She said the slain man had been trying to cross the border and fired at Israeli troops.

Israel still controls the Shabaa Farms area after ending its occupation of southern Lebanon in 2000.

But Lebanon claims the area, which the United Nations says belongs to Syria.
