Duke’s Rout Gives It a Shot at No. 1 Spot

Duke made its case for the No. 1 ranking by beating Virginia, 88-65, Friday at Durham, N.C.

With the victory, the No. 2 Blue Devils (22-1, 9-1) moved into a tie atop the Atlantic Coast Conference with No. 1 North Carolina and No. 6 Maryland.

The Terrapins had defeated the Tar Heels Thursday. Mistie Williams made eight of nine shots for a team-high 16 points for Duke, which had a 46-26 edge over the Cavaliers (13-9, 2-8) in rebounding.

No. 7 Ohio State 74, Michigan 55 -- Led by Jessica Davenport’s 23 points, the Buckeyes (20-2, 10-1) moved into a tie with Purdue for first place in the Big Ten with the victory over the Wolverines (6-18, 0-12) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

No. 8 Rutgers 54, West Virginia 41 -- The Scarlet Knights (19-3, 11-0 Big East) overcame an eight-minute scoring drought spanning both halves to beat the Mountaineers (12-10, 4-7) in a Big East game at Morgantown, W.Va.

No. 19 Temple 62, St. Louis 43 -- Candice Dupree had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Owls (18-5, 9-2 Atlantic 10) past the Billikens (5-17, 2-9), who made only 15 of 50 shots, in an Atlantic 10 game at St. Louis.
