The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Matthew R. Barnes, 20, of West Monroe, La.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Barnes was one of two Marines killed Tuesday by a suicide car bomber who attacked their Humvee in Qaim, Iraq, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Javier Chavez Jr., 19, of the Tulare County community of Cutler, Calif.; private first class, Marine Corps. Chavez was one of two Marines killed Feb. 9 by an improvised explosive device near Fallouja, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Edwin H. Dazachacon, 38, of Belleville, Ill.; staff sergeant, Army. Dazachacon was among four soldiers killed Monday when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb while on patrol in the Dihrawud district of Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province. After the explosion, they were attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. Dazachacon was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Felipe J. Garcia-Villareal, 26, of Burke, Va.; specialist, Army. Garcia-Villareal died Feb. 12 at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., of injuries suffered Feb. 9 when the tent where he slept while guarding supplies in the Iraqi desert caught fire and caused burns to threequarters of his body. The suspected accidental electrical fire near Ramadi, west of Baghdad, is under investigation, officials said. Garcia-Villareal was assigned to the 54th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, Warner Barracks in Bamberg, Germany.

Chad A. Gonsalves, 31, of Turlock, Calif.; sergeant first class, Army. Gonsalves was among four soldiers killed Monday when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb while on patrol in the Dihrawud district of Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province. After the explosion, they were attacked with rocketpropelled grenades and smallarms fire. Gonsalves was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Andrew J. Kemple, 23, of Cambridge, Minn.; corporal, Army. Kemple was killed Feb. 12 when his Humvee was attacked with small-arms fire during combat in Tikrit, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Alberto D. Montrond, 27, of Suffolk, Mass.; sergeant, Army. Montrond was among four soldiers killed Monday when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb while on patrol in the Dihrawud district of Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province. After the explosion, they were attacked with rocketpropelled grenades and smallarms fire. Montrond was assigned to the Group Support Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Clinton T. Newman, 26, of San Antonio; staff sergeant, Army Reserve. Newman was among four soldiers killed Monday when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb while on patrol in the Dihrawud district of Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province. After the explosion, they were attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. Newman was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 321st Civil Affairs Brigade at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Michael S. Probst, 26, of Irvine; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Probst was killed Tuesday by an improvised explosive device during combat near Abu Ghraib, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force in Twentynine Palms, Calif. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Rusty L. Washam, 21, of Huntsville, Tenn.; corporal, Marine Corps. Washam was one of two Marines killed Tuesday by a suicide car bomber who attacked their Humvee in Qaim, Iraq, near the Syrian border. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Nicholas Wilson, 25, of Newark Valley, N.Y.; petty officer third class, Navy. Wilson was killed Feb. 12 by an improvised explosive device in Iraq’s Al Anbar province, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the San Diego-based Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 3, which is responsible for removing unexploded devices and mines.
