A Worthy Pot in Pick Six

Share

Thanks to a rash of upsets on Monday, players will have a pick six carry-over of $231,863 to shoot for when racing resumes today at Santa Anita.

Two of the races in the sequence are at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the downhill turf course and both sprints are wide open.

In the fourth, a $40,000 claimer for older fillies and mares, Red Opal will make her first start since May 18 for owners Ron and Melodie McAtee and trainer John Sadler. The 7-year-old Flying Spur mare has run well on the Santa Anita turf, taking three of seven on the layout, including a half-length victory over Heatherinthemist and eight others in a $32,000 claimer last April 8.

One of the contenders in the seventh, a $50,000 allowance for older horses, is Seminole Native. A California-bred son of Lil Tyler, Seminole Native, who was scratched from the Sensational Star on Sunday when that race was taken off the turf due to wet weather, has won both of his starts on the local lawn. Corey Nakatani will ride for trainer Jorge Gutierrez.

The field includes two others who have won on the course. Margaritalosflores won by 2 1/2 lengths last Nov. 5 for trainer Steve Knapp and More Dust scored by three-quarters of a length on Jan. 7 for trainer Bobby Frankel.

Race of the day: Bank Audit, who has won four of 10 on Aqueduct’s inner track, will try to rebound from a fourth-place finish as the favorite in the Interborough Handicap on Jan. 1 when she takes on nine other fillies and mares in the $60,000 Flip’s Pleasure today. Norberto Arroyo Jr. will ride the 5-year-old Wild Rush mare for owner Robert Amendola and trainer Frank Laboccetta Jr. in the six-furlong contest.

One for the road: Flight West should improve with a race under his belt and can spring a mild upset in the sixth race today at Gulfstream Park. John Velazquez will ride the 3-year-old gray son of Gone West for owner-breeder Edward Evans and trainer Todd Pletcher in the $32,000 maiden race at one mile on the turf.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Swiss Sonata and Ameridar in the sixth, Seminole Native, Margaritalosflores and Miracle Maker in the seventh and Matty G Whiz in the eighth.

Winners: (previous day/meet total): 1/119. Money: (previous day/meet total): $16.20/$750.40. Total money bet: $722.
