Edison’s Fuga Knows the Angles

Romney Fuga knows a thing or two about leverage. It’s an integral part of wrestling, and the Huntington Beach Edison standout took fourth in the state last year in the heavyweight division.

A quick big man who applies that same intensity to his role on the Chargers’ football team, Fuga is The Times’ lineman of the year.

A three-year starter who carries a 3.7 grade-point average, he has been recruited on both sides of the ball.

As a defensive tackle, he had 11 sacks. As an offensive tackle, he helped Edison average 446 yards a game.

“Put the leverage, quickness, smarts and experience together and he’s got the total package,” Edison Coach Dave White said of Fuga. “He played every down of every game. He’s the best two-way lineman I’ve coached in 20 years.”

He has narrowed his college choices to Utah and Brigham Young.

“He’s pretty special kid, very humble, not your typical lineman,” White said. “After he knocks someone down, he goes and picks them up. You don’t see that very often. He’s a classy young man.”

And White offered this prediction:

“I’ll tell you right now, he’s going to be the state heavyweight champion.”
