Allaire Crozer du Pont, 92; Owned Champion Horse

Allaire Crozer du Pont, 92, a thoroughbred enthusiast and owner of Kelso, five-time Horse of the Year, died Friday of natural causes at her Woodstock Farm near Chesapeake City, Md.

Kelso, Du Pont’s best-known horse, won 39 races, placed second 12 times and third twice and amassed career earnings of nearly $2 million. He was voted Horse of the Year five consecutive years from 1960 to 1964, a record that has never been broken. When the horse was retired, Du Pont rode him three days a week.

Du Pont was a co-founder of Thoroughbred Charities, which aids retired racehorses, and was among the first to commit her land to Maryland’s Agricultural Land Preservation Program.

A native of Philadelphia, she was the widow of glider designer and builder Richard C. du Pont Sr., who died in the crash of an experimental glider during World War II. She flew gliders herself, played tennis and was an accomplished trap shooter.

Douglas Longshore, 56; Studied Substance Abuse

Douglas Yale Longshore, 56, associate director and principal investigator at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and adjunct behavioral scientist at Rand Corp., died Dec. 30 of metastatic melanoma at his home in Santa Monica.

His drug-use-related research interests included interventions for criminal offenders, motivation for treatment and recovery, racial-ethnic and cultural factors in treatment and recovery, and HIV incidence and risk behavior trends.

His work, including more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, was widely published in scientific journals.

His most recent research involved evaluating California’s Proposition 36, which gives adults arrested for nonviolent drug-related offenses the option of treatment.

Born in Bryan, Texas, in 1949, Longshore received a bachelor’s degree from Rice University. He earned a doctorate in sociology from UCLA in 1981.
