The government has opened an investigation of the 2004 Jeep Liberty after receiving complaints about a front suspension ball joint separating.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it had received seven complaints alleging the lower ball joint in the front suspension separated while driving. The agency said the investigation involved more than 170,000 vehicles. The Liberty is built by DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group.

Max Gates, a DaimlerChrysler spokesman, said the company was working with the agency to learn more about the issue.
