Robert Altman, who has directed such films as “MASH,” “Nashville” and “The Player,” will receive an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony March 5, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Wednesday.

The board of governors selected Altman because of his “innovation, his redefinition of genres, his invention of new ways of using the film medium and his reinvigoration of old ones,” said academy President Sid Ganis.

Altman, 80, also a writer and producer, has been nominated for an Oscar five times but has never won.
