Pooley Pulls Away in Hawaii
Don Pooley shot an eight-under-par 64 Saturday to take a three-stroke lead over Loren Roberts after the second round of the Champions Tour’s season-opening MasterCard Championship at Kaupulehu, Hawaii.
Pooley, who shared the first-round lead with Roberts and Tom Watson after matching the Hualalai record with a 63, had a 17-under 127 total on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course to tie the tour’s 36-hole record for relation to par.
Pooley, 54, seeking his third victory on the 50-and-over tour, had five straight birdies on Nos. 3-7 and also birdied Nos. 11-13 before closing his bogey-free round with five pars. He also had five straight birdies Friday.
“If I can keep making five birdies in a row, that would be great,” Pooley said. “If you win the first tournament, the pressure is off and you’re playing with the house’s money.”
Roberts shot a 67. Jay Haas (64) and D.A. Weibring (65) were four strokes back. Watson had a 69 to drop into a fifth-place tie with Fuzzy Zoeller.
