Husky Seniors Stop Oregon

Washington Coach Lorenzo Romar asked his leaders to lead. And that’s what they did Saturday night at Seattle.

Jamaal Williams scored 20 points, Brandon Roy scored 19 and Bobby Jones had 15 as No. 10 Washington’s three seniors turned what Romar called leadership “discussions” into a 78-59 victory over Oregon.

It was only the fifth time in 18 games the seniors were the top three scorers for Washington, 16-2 overall, 5-2 Pacific 10, which also starts two freshmen.

The Huskies moved into a tie with UCLA for first place by winning their fourth consecutive conference game since stunning, consecutive home losses to Arizona and Washington State.

Oregon (10-9, 4-3) lost for the 13th time in 14 games against ranked teams -- one week after it upset then-No. 24 Arizona at Eugene. The Ducks also saw their three-game winning streak end.

Williams continually harassed Malik Hairston defensively. Oregon’s leading scorer finished with 17 points -- but on six-for-18 shooting.

Roy, whom Romar calls Washington’s “best on-ball defender,” stymied point guard Aaron Brooks. Roy held the man whom he has played with and against since third grade to four points.

Arizona 60, California 55 -- Hassan Adams made two free throws with one second left at Tucson to clinch the Wildcats’ 14th victory over the Golden Bears their last 15 meetings.

Ivan Radinovic’s two free throws with 16 seconds left gave the Wildcats (12-6, 5-3) a 57-53 lead. But Leon Powe’s inside basket cut it to 57-55.

California (10-6, 4-3) had a chance to tie after Adams made one of two free throws with 8.1 seconds left. But Ayinde Ubaka missed an open three-point shot.

Stanford 70, Arizona State 64 -- The Sun Devils (7-10, 1-7) had the ball with 42 seconds left at Tempe, Ariz., trailing 66-64, but Kevin Kruger missed a layup and Serge Angounou was called for traveling with 20 seconds left after trying to get control of the loose ball. Stanford’s Chris Hernandez and Mitch Johnson each made two free throws in the final 15 seconds to give the Cardinal (8-7, 4-3) its fourth win in five games.

Oregon State 59, Washington State 50 -- Wesley Washington, making his first start for the visiting Beavers (10-8, 3-4), had season highs of 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Robbie Cowgill had 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks for the Cougars (9-7, 2-5).
