U.N. Force’s Chief Says No Raids Are Planned
From Times Wire Reports
The new commander of the U.N. peacekeeping force assured citizens of Haiti that the troops were not an occupation force and had no plan to raid volatile slums, as business leaders concerned about criminal gangs have suggested.
The troops are there to keep the peace for the Feb. 7 presidential vote, which has been delayed repeatedly by incompetence, bloodletting and logistical problems in the poorest country in the Americas.
