Going into great detail in Angelino Heights

Times Staff Writer

This classy old Victorian -- done up in eight colors with its ornate gingerbread porches -- has earned its “painted lady” status in Angelino Heights, an early Los Angeles suburb established when city boundaries stopped one mile west of downtown.

The hilly area was developed during L.A.’s first land boom, which followed a drop in the price of train tickets from the East. It attracted an upper-middle-class gentry eager for the convenience of downtown without the hustle and bustle.

Built in 1887 for Aaron Phillips, a merchant from Grinnell, Iowa, who came to the West for his daughter Grace’s health, this jewel has been owned by only one other family. It was last on the market in 1941.

The current owner, a local historian who has spent most of his life in the home, has meticulously restored its grandeur.

About this house: Designated as a city of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, the house has a living room, dining room, kitchen, pantry, three parlors including an upstairs sitting room, three bedrooms and -- unlike most Southern California houses -- an attic and a basement. There are palm trees and loquats, original to the house’s landscaping, in the backyard.

One of a couple of dozen Victorians on Carroll Avenue and surrounding streets, this house exemplifies the Eastlake-Queen Anne style.

Asking price: $2,195,000

Size: 2,940 square feet, excluding attic and basement

Features: Hardwood floors made of Douglas fir gleam. The many stained-glass windows reflect sunlight into an artsy pattern. Etched glass in a window depicts the California of that time with banana trees, cactus, ferns, a deer, mountains and the moon shining bright. Original wall moldings, brass fireplace moldings, hardwood mantles and imported tiles highlight the spacious yet cozy rooms. There are also views of downtown L.A.

Where: It is in the 1300 block of Carroll Avenue.

Listing agent: Crosby Doe, of Mossler & Doe Inc., has the listing. (310) 275-2222.

To submit a candidate for Home of the Week, please send color interior and exterior photos on a CD and a description of the house to Ruth Ryon, Real Estate Section, Los Angeles Times, 202 W. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90012.
