“Big Momma’s House 2” proved the biggest force in the neighborhood over the weekend, bringing in an estimated $28 million at the box office.

The sequel to the comedy starring Martin Lawrence in fat-suit-drag outperformed by $2.3 million the opening weekend for the original, which opened in the prime moviegoing month of July in 2003. First-day audiences for the sequel skewed 67% female, with 32% younger than 25, 20th Century Fox reported. In the four markets surveyed, 16% of men were under 25 and 17% were older.

“Big Momma’s House 2” -- An article in Monday’s Calendar section about how movies did at the box office last weekend described the demographics of the audience for “Big Momma’s House 2” and said that in the four markets surveyed, 16% of men were under 25 and 17% were older. It should have said that 16% of the audience consisted of men younger than 25 and 17% consisted of men older than 25.

Business for the sequel jumped 47% on Saturday, which producer David T. Friendly attributed to a surge in family attendance.

“People recognized it was a movie they could take their families to see,” he said Sunday morning. “What shocked us was seeing strollers in the aisles at 10 o’clock at night.”

The closely watched “Bubble,” Steven Soderbergh’s experimental movie that premiered on subscription TV the same day it opened in theaters, grossed an estimated $72,000 in 32 theaters, Magnolia Pictures President Eamonn Bowles said Sunday. That amount is unremarkable for a specialized movie in limited release.

“Bubble” will be available Tuesday on DVD.

Magnolia’s DVD and TV projections for “Bubble” were more optimistic: Bowles said via e-mail that Magnolia anticipates about $5 million from all revenue sources for the movie, which cost $1.6 million to make.

Distributor Magnolia and 2929 Productions, which produced the movie, are owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner as well as the subscription TV service HDNet Movies and Landmark Theatres.

In addition to “Big Momma’s House 2,” other new movies in the top 10 included Universal’s “Nanny McPhee,” in second place with an estimated $14.1 million, and Disney’s “Annapolis,” in fourth with an estimated $7.7 million.
