I read with astonishment Grahame L. Jones’ view that the referee was to blame for the Portugal-Netherlands fiasco.
Funny, I didn’t see the referee kick anyone nor waste time.
If the players are childish, stupid and violent, do not blame the referee.

Such writhing and grimacing and rolling around
Those brave World Cup players just drop to the ground.
And if they can act like a maniac lecher
They get to be carried by the men with the stretcher.

I would like to respectfully remind Grahame L. Jones that the World Cup trophy has in fact been “held high by an American.” [June 23] That is, an American woman, in the FIFA Women’s World Cup of 1999.
