From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Irma Colen, 84, who for more than 20 years led fundraising efforts for the Venice Family Clinic, a free healthcare center for the poor and uninsured, died Sunday at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica of complications from heart surgery.

One of her best-known fundraisers was the Venice Art Walk, which she and a group of other volunteers launched in 1981. The event, including tours of artists’ studios and an art auction, has raised millions of dollars for the Venice clinic.

Colen was also a longtime fundraiser for Democratic candidates, the American Civil Liberties Union and the University of Judaism. She received a number of commendations, including the President’s Volunteer Service Award during the Clinton administration.
