Evicted Farmers Storm Estate; at Least 5 Killed
At least five people were fatally shot or slashed to death when farmers tried to invade a large estate from which they had been evicted.
About 200 families attempted to enter the Finca Mocca estate in Alta Verapaz district but clashed with armed peasants on the land, police said. A government official said the armed peasants were current employees of the farm, which the estate’s owner denied.
The owner says hundreds of people were fired when the estate was converted to a tree farm. They are demanding land and claiming unpaid wages.
