Bolts won’t do the heavy lifting

Share

THANKS for the piece about using an old wrought-iron gate for a pot rack [“Funky Pot Rack, Bar None,” July 6]. However, I wouldn’t recommend using toggle bolts or molly bolts to hang up something that heavy, supported only by puffy drywall, or even plaster in older houses.

Much better to use an electronic stud-finder to locate the 2-by-4 or 2-by-6 ceiling joists (runners), and screw the supporting hooks deep through the drywall into the wood above. Mollys and toggles are designed to support things hanging on walls.
