‘Rent’ is paying a visit to Hollywood
“Rent,” the gritty off-Broadway rock opera that became a Tony Award-winning stage phenomenon, picked up a Pulitzer Prize and is now one of Broadway’s longest-running shows, is back in town on a new national tour.
Based on Puccini’s “La Boheme” and set in New York’s East Village, where a group of young artists struggle with love, loss and survival, “Rent” has its own real-life heartbreak: Creator Jonathan Larson never saw the show open for its initial off-Broadway run in 1996 at New York Theatre Workshop -- he died of an aortic aneurysm hours after the show’s final dress rehearsal, 10 days before his 36th birthday.
